Hair Recipes - Print & Post

Great hair care products can be costly. And with our current economic situations, many people have opted to sacrifice their manes, in exchange for basic survival of these hard times.  But don’t fear! Even if we are broke, we don’t have to look like we are.  Your kitchen is full of items that can be used to help maintain the integrity of your hair until your next appointment. Beautiful hair doesn’t have to be expensive as you'll see below:
  • EGGS – Beat an egg or 2 depending on your length & thickness and work into hair. Allow mixture to sit approximately 15minutes. The benefit to this is protein and strength. You could also add a drop of oil and get the benefits of protein and moisture at once!
  • OLIVE OIL - Warm a ¼ cup of olive oil and pour on to your hair. (More or less depending on dryness level, length and thickness). Be sure to drape a towel around your neck or put on an old shirt because at this consistency, it will definitely run. Cover with plastic and sit for 10-12 mins or longer if there is no hooded dryer available. The benefit to this is extreme moisture and shine. (And don’t sit on Mom’s good couch!)
  • MAYO - Grab a couple dollops of mayo and add to your hair after shampooing. Cover your hair in plastic and let sit 10-12mins. Don’t over do it or you will spend another 10 minutes rinsing your hair. Excellent shine and moisture will be the result.
  • VINEGAR - Shampoo your hair regularly, rinse, then pour vinegar onto your hair. Let it sit a few minutes, rinse and repeat with shampoo. Do this in a position that will not cause you blindness. PROTECT YOUR EYES! In this instance, vinegar is used as a cleanser or clarifying product for those who have oily hair or those with lots of build of from products.
  • LEMONS - Lemons have been known to give subtle color changes. Don’t expect anything drastic or even very noticeable but a change still will take place. The acid in lemons, will strip the color in your hair.  Shampoo hair, rinse and then squeeze a couple lemons on to your hair and lie out in the sun. The benefit here is a subtle change and free hi-lights.
  • OATMEAL - Make an oatmeal hair mask with a packet of regular oats. You could mix with egg or honey or nothing at all. Work it through your hair and let it sit 10mins. This process will benefit those with excessive oil on the hair or scalp. And on the flip side, those with dry/itchy scalp, oatmeal can help soothe you.
  • HONEY - Warm ¼ cup of honey and add to hair or other mixture. The benefits here is moisture.
  • PLASTIC - You can use plastic wrap or thin plastic shopping bags to cover your hair while conditioning. This is a good way to recycle the item, instead of just throwing them away or lining trash cans. The plastic helps retain moisture while processing.
  • COLD WATER - After you finish shampooing, do a final rinse of cold water on your hair. The benefit here is cold water gives shine to your hair
